Following the current 2018/19 Summer initiation season, Minister Anroux Marais welcomed home the newly initiated men in Gugulethu at the Initiates Homecoming Celebration on 4 January 2019.
Initiation is the cultural transition from boyhood to manhood. In the Western Cape, it is predominantly practiced by Xhosa, Sotho and Hlubi cultures. The Western Cape has a track record of the safest initiation practice in the country.
One of the Basothos schools in Gugulethu are very impressed with the success achieved this year as there were 87 initiates, of which 4 are living with disabilities, with no incidents reported.
The Western Cape Government is committed to ensure that the rite of passage is preserved and practiced in a safe and conducive environment.
