Overstrand hockey development boosted by new lights at Hermanus pitch

21 November 2018

Hockey development in Hermanus and throughout the Overstrand Municipality received a boost on Tuesday when the new floodlights at the Hermanus Sports Complex astroturf were officially switched on by Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Minister, Anroux Marais.

The synthetic pitch was completed in late 2017 following a partnership between the municipality, Hermanus High School, the Overberg Sport Council and the WP Hockey Federation to develop a Hockey Academy.

DCAS also allocated R1 171 000 to the project to fund the completion of the change rooms and clubhouse facilities. Before officially switching on the lights, Minister Marais thanked stakeholders for coming together to make the project possible.

“Our youth are so important and this is one of the facilities that really keeps them away from drugs, gangsterism and other evils. I want to thank you all so much for investing in this facility. The surroundings are just fantastic,” Minister Marais said.

The pitch is the only hockey astroturf in the region and is also used by the Hermanus High School and Hermanus Hockey Club teams. The lights will allow players to make use of the in-demand facility after dark.

DCAS aims to provide Western Cape residents with quality sports facilities and works to encourage participation in sport. BETTER TOGETHER.
