Minister Anroux Marais' Speech at the SA Foundation for Islamic Art Fundraiser

19 November 2018

WESTERN CAPE MINISTER OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND SPORT, ANROUX MARAIS

SOUTH AFRICAN FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART FUNDRAISER ADDRESS

16 NOVEMBER 2018

Good evening, goeienaand, molweni nonke, salaam

It is indeed a great pleasure and honour to be a part of this joyous cultural expression through art. I wholeheartedly that the South African Foundation for Islamic Art for the invitation.

I am especially delighted to be present at the very first fundraiser co-ordinated by the foundation as the organisation focusses on the development of Islamic art and plans to have monthly themes to create further awareness thereof. It is indeed heartening to know that the monthly competitions are open to all artists, of all levels, and to members of the public interested in visual arts and the work of members is not limited to only Islamic art but is dependent on the interest of the individual artist.

A multicultural and truly democratic community not only respects cultural diversity, but also creates the enabling climate for the effective preservation, promotion and extension of culture. It is for this reason that I support the aim of the foundation to create a unique visual identity for South African Islamic Art and to establish a platform to showcase South African art while promoting art activities amongst school children especially from vulnerable areas and those who do not have access to artistic activity.

I look forward to working better together with all of you and wish you well with your future endeavours. There is no doubt in my mind that together we can promote respect for cultural diversity and advance artistic disciplines into viable opportunities by nurturing talent and encouraging excellence whilst expanding mass participation and appreciation of the arts within all communities through arts and culture programmes.  Remember, the beauty of the Western Cape lies in the diversity of its people. I trust that your passion will drive purpose while your purpose drives passion.

I thank you.
