Media Alert: Saldanha Bay Rugby Clubs to receive equipment from Minister Marais

16 October 2018

Tomorrow, 17 October 2018, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, will present sporting equipment to clubs in the Saldanha Bay Municipality.

The handovers follow requests from St Helena Bay Rugby Club and West Coast community members who will participate in the 2018 SA Fish industries Rugby Tournament.

The SA Fish Industries Tournament creates the opportunity for rugby players in the fishing industry to make their mark at the two-day rugby festival starting on 26 October 2018 in Saldanha Bay.

The annual tournament, which features 16 teams from the surrounding fish factories, was the brainchild of the late Dr Danie Craven, former Springbok centre, Ian Kirkpatrick and former Proteas skipper Dougie Dyers, and was first held in Saldanha in 1987. The objective of the tournament is to offer players working in the fishing industry an opportunity to participate in sport and to wear the colours of their employers.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is committed to creating an enabling environment in which our sport clubs can flourish at grassroots level to increase mass participation, skills development and talent identification in the province.
