Western Province Sport Federations Receive Financial Support

22 April 2012

Western Province sports federations which work together and engage in meaningful partnerships with communities and other role players deserve government support. Speaking at Newlands Rugby Stadium on 23 April 2012, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, paid tribute to federations from across the Cape Metropolitan region.

This event marked the announcement of R1.5 million of Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) funding to 43 sporting federations in various codes for their development and administration. A further R554 260 was earmarked for major sporting events organised by 17 federations. There has been a rapid growth in sporting activity in the region, which has always been a key platform for developing sport talent in the province.

Dr Meyer described the work of the federations as inspirational, saying that communities need good role models who can lead by example, on the sports field and in other areas of life. He praised their work in promoting sport as a way of reducing crime and creating jobs, thereby contributing to socio-economic development.

Advocate Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, said that the funding would be made available as soon as possible in order that the various sports programmes can be delivered to communities in the Metropole. After consultations with sports federations across the Western Cape, a total amount of R3.9 million will be made available to sport federations across the province.
