Junior Rugby to Kick off in Rugby-Crazy Province

4 June 2012

The International Rugby Board (IRB) u/20 Junior Championship will bring thousands of supporters together in a rugby-crazy province. The South African Rugby union (SARU), Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) , City of Cape Town and various other partners officially launched the tournament at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday, 1 June 2012.

Various dignitaries and media, as well as captains and coaches of the competing teams attended the media launch. This championship, comprising 12 of the best teams in the world, will kick off on Monday, 4 June 2012, with three matches scheduled at the University of Western Cape Stadium and another three at the famous Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch. This tournament will continue until Friday, 22 June 2012, when the champions will be crowned.

DCAS is proud to be associated with the tournament and enthusiastic rugby supporters can expect guaranteed entertaining performances from these juniors.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, said he's confident that this will be an exciting tournament and expects this to be the best ever u/20 junior rugby championship. The Western Cape is actively involved to promote sport tourism, as we've seen with the focus on youth with the recently held u/20 8 Nations Championship in Cape Town.

Dr Meyer said: "It's a proud moment for us to see these youngsters compete at this level and we'll definitely see the next generation of rugby stars here." He urges supporters to come out in numbers to attend these matches and support the Junior Bokkies, the South African u/20 team.

With this tournament being played at venues at Universities, DCAS hopes this will have a significant contribution to the youth in promoting social inclusion. Tickets are available from Computicket and prices are as follows: Grand Stand (R50) and Open Stand (R25).
