Friendly competition at Cape Winelands Better Together Games

9 October 2017

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with Old Mutual, Nedbank and Peninsula Beverages, hosted the 2017 Cape Winelands Better Together Games at Boland Park Stadium in Worcester on 6 October 2017.

The sunny day saw various Western Cape Government departments, as well as municipalities from the Cape Winelands district, compete in various sporting codes, such as rugby, netball, soccer, pool and dominoes. The Better Together Games is held annually to encourage staff of the Western Cape Government to participate in physical activities and to promote team work between staff members. The day also saw the celebration of the 2017 National Recreation Day, usually celebrated on the first Friday in October.

Councillor Mei from the Breede Valley Municipality welcomed all participants to the sports day and wished them the best in their sporting efforts. "It is a privilege to host this lovely event and to share the excitement and fun of this day in the company of friends and colleagues" said Councillor Mei.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially opened the Games and thanked all the athletes for their participation in the Games. "Thank you for making the choice to live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy every event," said Minister Marais.

The remainder of the 2017 Better Together Games will take place as follows:

  • 13 October at Vredenburg Sports Ground, Vredenburg
  • 27 October at Blue Downs Sports Stadium in Blue Downs.

Sport is a unifier and connector of people. Let us continue to participate in sport and motivate one another to achieve greatness through sport, BETTER TOGETHER.
