Rich history shared in Vredendal

24 August 2017

The Oral History initiative was rolled out at the Vredendal Community Hall on 21 August 2017. The initiative was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Matzikama Municipality. The project was hosted in Vredendal which has a diverse and rich history.

The day celebrated the richness and diversity of the area through storytelling, song and dance. The event kicked off with a special welcome performance by the Cadet School of Academy. Guests were also treated to a vibrant dance performance by the Griekwa Riel dancers, traditional songs by students of the West Coast College and an enjoyable ‘boeremusiek’ performance by Louis Brink and his son Egbert Brink.  DCAS Museum Service screened a DVD video-clip where participants shared their respective stories.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, encouraged community members to come and share their stories at their local libraries to ensure that these stories are preserved for future generations to come.

The highlight of the day was the handing over of the Oral History framed posters and DVDs to libraries in Vredendal, Klawer, Lutzville, Vanrhynsdorp, Ebenhaeser and Doringbaai. Minister Marais also handed DVDs to all participants involved the project.

DCAS is committed to preserving the stories of local communities for future generations. Let us continue to celebrate our stories BETTER TOGETHER.
