Great Sportsmanship and Camaraderie at the Farmworkers’ Sports Day

2 May 2017

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Sports Confederation (WCPSC) hosted the 9th Annual Farmworkers’ Sports Day at Swellendam Primary School on Saturday, 29 April 2017. It was a day of fun-filled sporting activities for hundreds of farmworkers from the Cape Winelands, Cape Town Metropolitan area, Eden, Overberg, West Coast and Central Karoo.

The Mayor of the Overberg District Municipality, Andries Franken welcomed the farmworkers to the event. “It is wonderful having you here today as you play an important role in our province.” Gert Loubser, the chairperson of the Western Cape Farmworkers’ Sports Commission thanked DCAS and WCPSC for their involvement in making the day a reality.

Supporters cheered as their respective teams participated in cross-country running, netball, soccer, rugby, tug of war and dominoes. The strong performances and the high levels of energy of the participants representing their regional teams showed that the pride of farmworker sport is alive and well in the Western Cape.

DCAS and its partners strive to give all the people of the Western Cape the opportunity to participate in sport and recreation.  We encourage farmworkers to participate and to embrace a healthy lifestyle - BETTER TOGETHER.
