Langa School To Receive Xhosa Chess Booklets From Minister Marais

10 October 2016

Tomorrow, 11 October 2016, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marias will be handing over Xhosa chess booklets to Thembani Primary School in Langa.

The chess booklet, the first of its kind, was launched in July 2015. Author, Watu Kobese identified a need for a booklet in Xhosa and worked together with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to develop the Xhosa terminology for chess pieces and moves.

Minister Marais said that this booklet will make it easier for children to master the game of chess. “Children will now be able to learn about the sport in their home language. This is one of the ways in which the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport ensures that all children are provided an equal opportunity to hone in their talents in this stimulating sport,” she said.
