Tri-District Drama Showcases Come To An End In Bredasdorp

6 September 2016

The adjudication of the showcase performances held as part of the Tri-District Drama Programme concluded with the Overberg Drama Festival hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with the Cape Agulhas Municipality at the De Heide Primary School Hall in Bredasdorp on Saturday, 3 September 2016. It was thanks in part to strong collaboration with the Overberg District Municipality and partnerships with the Baxter Theatre and the Zabalaza Festival that these presentations by the youth were possible.

Seven drama groups participated in the festival, and at the end of proceedings four groups were selected to take part in the grand finale come November. The finalists were Plaasjappies (Villiersdorp), Net vir Pret (Barrydale), Most Wanted (Swellendam) and Bredasdorp’s very own Albert Myburgh High School drama group.

Executive Mayor for the Cape Agulhas Municipality, Paul Swart, officially welcomed everyone present and encouraged the performers at the start of the day’s proceedings. “Programmes like these are what our community needs, and we need to get more youth involved in these types of programmes that provide our youth with these amazing opportunities in the arts,” he said.

DCAS Cultural Officer Moeniel Jacobs thanked the mayor and his staff for committing to host the programme finale on 12 November 2016, ensuring that all of Cape Agulhas will have the opportunity to see the talent on show.

With the conclusion of the showcase adjudication, the selected groups can look forward to further training in production development at the Tri-District Development Workshop from 30 September to 2 October 2016 at the Schoemanspoort Cultural Facility in Oudtshoorn. Here selected groups from Eden, the Cape Winelands and the Overberg will receive valuable skills in preparation for the finale.

DCAS and its partners aim to further develop the arts through festivals such as these and to expose the young talent of the Western Cape to different opportunities, BETTER TOGETHER.
