It gives me great pleasure to present R2 648 250 to the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation today.

As the custodian of sport in the province, the Confederation enables its structures to fulfil their mandate by promoting and developing the various sporting organizations in the Western Cape. This funding allocation promotes greater participation in sport, social inclusion and contributes to a healthier lifestyles. It will indeed assist the Confederation in its functions:

  • To advance the needs of all sports people, both able bodied and the disabled.
  • To protect the integrity of youth and school sport.
  • To facilitate effective communication between all stakeholders.
  • To empower and unify members with effective and efficient leadership.
  • To embrace accountability, transparency and sound corporate governance.

Participation in sport and recreational activities has a holistic effect in our communities. Involvement in sport and recreation has a positive impact on social development, health, education, human and social capital. It is for this reason that I thank the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation for the instrumental role they play in increasing wellness and safety and in tackling social ills.

With the funds made available to you today, I am sure the Confederation will continue to nurture and develop athletes from grassroots to elite level which will enable them to participate on national and international stages. It will be the very same athletes who will serve as role models and beacons of hope in their communities, which significantly contributes to the overall upliftment of our vulnerable areas.

I thank you for your continued support in promoting sporting excellence in the Western Cape.
