9 December 2015

On Thursday 3 December 2015 19 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) participants received certificates at a ceremony after successfully completing the training programme in Arts and Culture Management on Community Level.

The course is SETA (Skills Education Training Authority) accredited and was facilitated by Artéma, the Institute for Arts Management and Development at the North-West University. The participants are all working in the various cultural affairs sections at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), including Archives, Library, Arts and Culture and Museum Services.  Chief Director of DCAS Cultural Affairs Hannetjie Du Preez says the training is a valuable opportunity for the EPWP participants to learn about organisational management and governance of arts and culture projects.

EPWP participant, Anrique Farmer, who works at the Togryers museum in Ceres, said that the training course provided him with an opportunity to empower himself. “This course helped me to understand certain aspects in arts and culture that I had no knowledge of.  I am sure that with the knowledge obtained I will be able to perform better in the workplace as well as outside workplace.  The course covers the basics about what the arts is and managing the arts which is really going to assist me move forward into the arts and culture direction which I have a huge interest in.”

DCAS creates valuable opportunities for all the people of the Western Cape. The EPWP empowers unemployed people with marketable skills BETTER TOGETHER.
