Top Athletes Honoured At The Cape Winelands Sport Awards

20 November 2015

Outstanding athletes from various sport codes were honoured at the Cape Winelands Sport Awards on 19 November 2015 at Rhebokskloof Estate. The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hosted the event in partnership with the Cape Winelands Sport Council and Cape Winelands Municipality.

There were proud moments all round with 21 federations nominated in the various categories. The event focused on the role of sport in nation-building; as well as ways in which sport can contribute to the upliftment of communities.

The executive mayor of Cape Winelands, Alderman Neels De Bruyn, highlighted how sport can contribute to nation-building and encourage team work. He said, “This is an opportunity to congratulate those who have worked hard and excelled in sport.”

Advocate Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation for DCAS, spoke of the vision and mission of the department and how important it is to create positive partnerships to enable sport to offer life opportunities to athletes. Advocate Bouah said, “This function would not be possible without the hard work of the sportsmen and sportswomen present here tonight.”

The next sports awards will be held in Overberg on 20 November 2015 and in Central Karoo on 27 November 2015.

DCAS and its partners will continue to support athletes in their goals, giving them the necessary support to continue growing in all their sporting endeavours in the Western Cape BETTER TOGETHER.
