Friendly Competition at the West Coast Better Together Games

13 October 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hosted the 2015 West Coast Better Together Games on 9 October at the Vredenburg Sports Complex in partnership with the Saldanha Bay Municipality, Old Mutual, Nedbank and Peninsula Beverages.

The day started with departments taking part in a march-past, during which they showed their confidence and excitement. Sport enthusiasts from as far as Matzikama Municipality eagerly anticipated a day of sporting fun and friendly competition between departments. Participants were able to take part in various sport codes such as darts, table tennis, jukskei, mini-cricket and soccer.

Deputy Executive Mayor of Saldanha Bay Municipality, Ald. Elize Steyn, welcomed the eager participants and reminded them of the advantages and positive outcomes of participating in a sporting event. “Good sportsmanship is one of the most important lessons that we can learn from competition. Success in sport can only be achieved if we learn to play the game with a good attitude,” said Ald. Steyn.

Henry Paulse from DCAS provided participants with a brief history of the Better Together Games. “It is very important that all the departments of the Western Cape Government come together and build a team that can succeed,” he said.

The remainder of the Better Together Games will take place as follows:

  • Cape Winelands/Overberg Better Together Games on 16 October 2015 in Worcester, and
  • Metro Better Together Games in Stellenbosch on 23 October 2015.
