isiXhosa Chess Book to Develop Champions at MOD Schools

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in conjunction with Watu Kobese, author of the country’s first ever isiXhosa Chess book,  handed over the books to four schools in the Western Cape at a ceremony held at Hazendal Primary School, in Athlone on Tuesday 18 August 2015.

The schools were Sopokama Primary School, Masiphumelele Primary School, Nomlinganiselo Primary School and Hazendal Primary School. These schools are all part of DCAS’s Mass Participation; Opportunity and Access; Development and Growth (MOD) Programme and offer chess to its learners.

Kobese is one of the country’s best players. He holds the title of international master and he has represented South Africa many times internationally. He launched the first isiXhosa chess book in July 2015. Kobese identified a need for a book of its kind and worked together with DCAS to develop the isiXhosa terminology for chess pieces and moves, a first of its kind initiative.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, said she is pleased that children will now be able to learn about chess in their home language of isiXhosa and in a way that will encourage excellence and inclusivity in sports. “The handing over of these isiXhosa chess books is the physical implementation of the department’s mission to move towards excellence, through creating the conditions for access and mass participation, talent identification and skills development.”

In his vote of thanks Adv. Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director for Sport and Recreation at DCAS, thanked Watu Kobese for the great initiative. “He has made it possible that more chess champions can come from the Western Cape” said Bouah.

We can only develop a winning nation if we support participation in sport and recreation at all levels. The publication of this book by DCAS and its partners aims to improve participation in chess throughout the Western Cape, BETTER TOGETHER.
