DCAS Boosts the Olympic Values on the Road to Albertinia

30 June 2015

The Western Cape’s Olympic Day celebration will this year take place in Albertinia on 26 September 2015. There is a three-month lead-up to the big event called the “Road to Albertinia”, a travelling exhibition which will be moving from place to place in the Eden District. The first step on the road was a two-day exhibition on 25 and 26 June at the De Jager Sport Complex in Oudtshoorn.

Learners from local schools had the opportunity to find out about the Olympic Games, light a symbolic Olympic torch, participate in story-telling sessions, complete quizzes and share their questions and views with Bennett Bailey of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. Olympic Day is an international event to celebrate the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.

The international theme is “move, learn and discover”. The values of the Olympic Games are excellence, friendship, respect, Olympism, joy of effort, fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and balance between body, will and mind.

DCAS and its partners – the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC), the Eden District Sport Council and the Hessequa Municipality – are proud to spread the spirit of Olympism on the “Road to Albertinia”.
