DCAS Adds Value to Youth of Elsies River

18 June 2015

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted a Youth Sport Day on Tuesday 16 June 2015 in Elsies River.

The youth came from Connaught Estate, Eureka Estate, Uitsig and Ravensmead to showcase their talent in netball and street soccer tournaments. They also received training on how to build kites.

These communities are heavily affected by social challenges and DCAS is committed to establishing a sports culture in this area by involving the youth in sport and recreational activities. These sport and recreation programmes are a huge aid to the youth of this area in addressing the social ills and challenges they are faced with.

Beverly van Reenen, Ward 25 Councillor for the City of Cape Town, inspired the youth by saying that although they live in a poverty stricken and gang ridden area their future is not determined by where they came from, but by their discipline, positive attitude and the will to be successful.

DCAS made it possible for the community of Elsies River to participate on Youth Day in sport and recreational activities and also equipped the youth with new skills to share with the community.
