Minister Marais Launches Partnership to give Learners Sporting Opportunities

17 June 2015

On Tuesday, 16 June 2015, Minister Anroux Marais officially launched the partnership between the Western Cape Government and Dreamfields, which will offer youth across the Western Cape the opportunity to take part in sport and also talk about issues in their communities.

The launch took place at the De la Bat School for the Deaf in Worcester. Two schools for deaf children are included in this programme and this will also start a dialogue between children who have grown up in different circumstances. Learners from various schools in the region participated in a soccer and netball tournament. The learners also attended social dialogue sessions, where they could speak about problems they face in their everyday lives. The sessions also focused on problems such as teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and bullying.

Dreamfields also handed over basic soccer and netball kits to all the participating schools. Minister Marais encouraged all the children present to participate in the social dialogue sessions, and also to enjoy the competition on the sports field. “Playing sport teaches you to work in a team and to celebrate your shared victory, but it also teaches you to accept defeats graciously and to keep going.” she said.

The partnership will continue to present programmes at various schools across the province throughout the year.
