DCAS Celebrates Africa Day in Phillipi

2 June 2015

On Sunday 31 May 2015, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in conjunction with South African Football Association (SAFA) Cape Town, SA Breweries and Philippi Local Football Association (LFA), hosted an Africa Day soccer tournament at the Philippi Stadium.

It was vitally important for DCAS to host this event, especially after the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Eight teams with players from different countries and different cultural backgrounds came together and displayed their skills in order to promote sport for peace.

The crowd sang the National Anthem before the games kicked off. Philippi LFA was victorious over opponents Mali 2–0 in the final match.

Bennett Bailey of DCAS said “We are indebted to Africa for our freedom. These Africa Day celebrations are a small token of our appreciation for Africa’s sacrifices.”

President of Philippi LFA Lucas Mlandezwa said he thought the tournament would help to combat xenophobia. “Here in Cape Town we have different cultures but we are one community”.

If we respect each other, stand together and work together, we can instill a sense of pride in Africa, BETTER TOGETHER.
