Youth and Rural Drama Talent in Oudtshoorn

16 April 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted the inaugural Best of DCAS drama programme in Oudtshoorn at the Schoemanspoort Cultural Facility, from 8–11 April 2015.

The programme was aimed at providing quality and free theatre productions to the local communities. It comprised of all the best productions that have been developed by participants who have entered DCAS’ Drama Festivals since its initiation in 2011.

The Best of DCAS was directed by well-known artistic director of the Baxter Theatre, Mr Thami Mbongo, and he was assisted by television and big screen celebrity, Abduraghmaan Adams (Four corners and 7de Laan). The two of them ensured all productions were stage-ready for the showcases.

“It is a great feeling for some of these youngsters, who conceptualised their productions at this facility four years ago, to come back to that same facility which has now been transformed to a theatre, and show off their talent to the community of Oudtshoorn and surrounds,” said Mbongo.

Productions presented included:

  • Kairos Drama Group (Winners of the Eden Drama Festival 2011) with Up in Smoke
  • Redlight 7 (Winners of the Eden Drama Festival 2012) with Tussen Grafte
  • Ubumnandi Bethu (Winners of the Eden Drama Festival 2013) with Life after Hurt
  • New Age Drama Group (Winners of the Eden Drama Festival 2014) with Blomme Vir Oulaas

DCAS also included winners from the Cape Winelands district:

  • Team Bring It (Winners of the Cape Winelands Drama Festival 2014) with Unlocked Cages
  • Vangnet Drama group (Runners up of the Cape Winelands Drama Festival 2014)

In the light of giving opportunities, two productions with exceptional talent and promise were invited to perform as well:

  • Langeberg Mix Group (Most promising production Cape Winelands Drama Festival 2014) with Untitled
  • Beat Drama Group (Most promising production Eden Drama Festival 2014) with Should I wear the shoes

DCAS offers communities the opportunities to showcase and hone their artistic skills. Community members should use these opportunities to gain more exposure. Let us create a province of artistic excellence BETTER TOGETHER.
