Shandong Sailors in Cape Town for Regattas

2 April 2015

It all started a few years ago when a small delegation from the Western Cape visited Shandong in China and signed a Province-to-Province sister relationship between the Western Cape and Shandong.

On Wednesday, 1 April 2015 a delegation of eight – seven youth and one team leader – arrived at Cape Town International Airport as part of the Youth Sailing Exchange Program between SA Sailing Western Cape and the Qingdao Water Sports Administration Centre in Shandong, China. This exchange program forms part of the sister relationship the Western Cape has with Shandong.

The Western Cape delegation, led by Adv. Lyndon Bouah of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), as well as Craig Lesley and Perry Harrison-Hyde from SA Sailing, welcomed these eight delegates to the fairest Cape where they will participate in a sailing competition in Simon’s Town from Friday, 3 April to Monday, 6 April 2015, with the SA Sailing team Western Cape.

“DCAS funded and facilitated this exchange as part of this Youth Sailing Exchange Program,” said DCAS Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, Adv. Lyndon Bouah.

Theuns Botha, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, has emphasised the importance of partnerships in sport. “These kinds of partnerships create an opportunity for our athletes to learn new approaches and to hone their existing skills.” he said.

DCAS offers sporting opportunities to youth. Partnerships such as these enable us to ensure we create an active province, BETTER TOGETHER.
