The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Western Province Sports Council acknowledged the best Cape Metro athletes, federations and teams of the year at a regional awards ceremony on Friday, 28 November 2014.
Chief Director of Sport at DCAS, Adv. Lyndon Bouah, said the various regional award ceremonies celebrated sport excellence across the province. President of the WP Sports Council JP Naude said ongoing support from Department was a key factor in the success of the region’s sports stars.
Phumza Maweni, a Western Province and South African national team netball player, won the Sportswoman of the Year award. “I am so honoured. I have never received an award in my life and it feels good to know that my efforts this year have not gone unnoticed,” she said.
Former SA sailing coach David Hudson was proud to accept the Team of the Year Award on behalf of his sailors. The team was competing in Abu Dhabi on the weekend. Hudson is a star in his own right, having been a high performance delegate for the Western Cape team and coach of the sailing team that represented South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics. “Winning this is such a motivating factor for young people,” he said. “You don’t only have to participate in the ‘big three’ sports codes to be acknowledged. Thank you!”
DCAS and its partners support athletes in the Western Cape to achieve their goals and excel at their chosen sports, better together.
