Sporting Success at the West Coast Better Together Games

20 October 2014

A sunny day and positive attitudes contributed to a successful and spirited West Coast Better Together Games, held in Vredenburg on 17 October. Thousands of Western Cape Government employees, municipal employees and South African Police, Special Forces and Navy travelled from far and wide to attend the Games. The event was hosted by the  Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and Saldanha Bay municipality in partnership with sponsors Nedbank, Old Mutual and Cape Peninsula Beverages

In addition to a number of sporting codes, the participants of the West Coast Better Together were able to have health checks such as having their blood pressure, blood sugar and HIV status checked. The participants made it clear that they were there not only to support colleagues from their own departments, but their colleagues in general.

DCAS acting regional manager for the West Coast District, Cornelius Malgas, wished the participants good luck for the day and said that one of the  aims of the day was to promote a healthy lifestyle among the participants. "These games enhance interaction between local government employees and build team spirit through sports", he said.

Councillor Ryan Don from Saldanha Bay Municipality said that good sportsmanship is one of the most important we can learn from competition. "Knowing success in sports is learning to play the game with a certain attitude rather than focussing on whether we win or lose, and transferring that knowledge to other tasks and activities" said Mr Don to the participants.

"The competition was very tough, but I enjoyed the day", said Ziyanda Phoswayo, an employee of Saldanha Bay municipality, who played netball at the Better Together Games. The West Coast Better Together Games received 2000 entries from participants who took part in the sporting day, showing that these sporting events bring WCG employees together in a positive space.

The last Better Together Games for 2014 will take place at Coetzenburg Sport Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday, 31 October for all Metro employees.
