IsiXhosa Reading and Spelling Competition a Big Success
Learners from three Khayelitsha primary schools proudly displayed their isiXhosa language skills at a reading competition and spelling bee organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). The event took place on 26 September 2014 at Isiphiwo Primary School in Harare, Khayelitsha. Contestants came from Grades 4 to 7, and the books used at the event were supplied by the Harare Public Library and Biblionef.
Learners from host school Isiphiwo engaged in a spirit of friendly competition with their counterparts from Luleka Primary and Ludwe Ngamala Primary. Isiphiwo came out on top in every category. The event was one of the highlights of an ongoing DCAS Language Services programme to promote the enjoyment of reading through after-school reading clubs.
Teachers expressed their appreciation for how the programme had helped learners to develop a love for their mother tongue. Kamva Msindo, one of the Grade 7 learners who participated in the competition, said “The more I read, the better I feel”. She said she had gained self-confidence through reading in isiXhosa.
DCAS supports the development of previously marginalised languages in the Western Cape through after-school reading clubs and other initiatives. The people of the province are enthusiastically embracing these opportunities to develop their mother tongues, better together.
