Minister Mbombo gives 67 minutes at Isikhokelo MOD Centre

21 July 2014

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Minister of Cultural Affairs Sport, spent 67 minutes in Khayelitsha on International Nelson Mandela Day at one of the Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) centres of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in the Western Cape.

The MOD Programme is one of the flagship initiatives of the Western Cape Government. There are currently more than 181 MOD Centres across the province that provide sport and recreational activities to over 40 000 registered participants from disadvantaged communities and underserved schools.

Minister Mbombo and her Ministerial staff gave their 67 minutes at the Isikhokelo Primary school, serving food to the learners and participating in informal talks on Madiba and poetry in the library. The MOD learners were keen to showcase their talent and newly learned skills to the Minister and the DCAS outreach became a win-win situation for both the learners and visitors in the spirit of Mandela Day.

The Department is proud of its MOD programme which, encourages youth to engage in healthy and safe activities. A school holiday programme is also run to ensure that youth have a safe place to engage in healthy activities outside of term time.
