Figure Skating Talent on Show

15 May 2014

Some of the Western Cape’s best figure skaters performed in the colourful National Figure Skating showcase at the Ice Station, GrandWest on 13 May 2014. The showcase was presented by Western Province Figure Skating Association (WPFSA) and supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

The showcase featured national figure skaters like Jade Carels, Courtney Kuhn, Johann Wilkinson, Matthew Samuels and Kathryn Winstanley, as well as two synchronised skating teams. The showcase was, for many skaters, a dress rehearsal in preparation for the South African National Figure Skating Championships in Gauteng from 19 to 21 May 2014. The competition is held annually to determine the national champions.

Dawn van der Riet, chairperson of WPFSA, said all funds raised at the event will be used to assist these talented skaters with the cost of travelling to Gauteng for the championships. She thanked the audience for their support in preparing the skaters for the championships. “Now you can see what they are achieving on the ice.”

For skaters, this was the last opportunity to work out every detail of their performance. Jade Carels, who skated in the Junior Ladies section, is hoping to do well at the championships. “I was forced to withdraw from last year’s championships due to injury. Hopefully this year I can improve and make my province proud.” WPFSA and DCAS are hoping to welcome back many proud champions from the national competition.
