Western Cape Sport Receives Funds and Recognition

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) handed over funding to the Western Cape Sport Confederation and various Western Cape municipalities in Cape Town on 23 April 2014. A number of top sport achievers were also acknowledged at the event.

A total of R2.3 million was allocated to regional sport councils affiliated to the Western Cape Sport Confederation. This amount will be invested in major events, development, transformation, administration and capacity building.

A total of R1.2 million for municipal sport was distributed as follows:

  • R150 000 to Swartland Municipality;
  • R500 000 to Langeberg Municipality;
  • R250 000 to the City of Cape Town;
  • R50 000 to Breede Valley Municipality;
  • R150 000 to Drakenstein Municipality; and
  • R100 000 to Cape Agulhas Municipality.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer praised sport councils and municipalities for the role they play in promoting sport and recreation, as well as sports tourism. “Your effective leadership and commitment make it possible for our athletes to excel on the provincial, national and international stage. By doing this, you are shining a light on the Western Cape.”

Dr Meyer honoured the athletes who excelled at the recent Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled and Ajax Cape Town, winners of the Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup. “You have made the Western Cape proud. We acknowledge your hard work and effort.” Dr Meyer thanked partners and key sponsors Nedbank and Metropolitan for adding value to the lives of communities.

Mr Steven Vearey, Chairperson of Western Province Sports Association for the Physically Disabled said being recognised for their achievements motivates athletes to continue working hard. “We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and the Department for making it possible for athletes to reach their competitive potential,” he said.
