Funding and Equipment for West Coast Sport Federations and Clubs

15 April 2014

On 14 April 2014, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer handed over a cheque in the amount of R380 000 to 11 sport federations affiliated to the West Coast Sport Council. This amount will be invested in development, transformation, administration and capacity building.

A total of R90 000 will go to five sport federations to host major sporting events such as the very successful annual Fish Factory Rugby Tournament. In addition, equipment was handed over at the event to the Kasparov Chess Club (Vredenburg), Kasparov Fisher Chess Club (Saldanha), as well as the West Coast Kickboxing, Cycling and Netball federations.

Dr Meyer said “West Coast sport federations and clubs have good knowledge of administration, financial management, coaching, infrastructure and long-term athlete development. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is rewarding your success through this funding.”

Errol Gans of West Coast Kickboxing said support from the DCAS Club Development Programme assists his federation to develop the code in the region. “Since 2009, kickboxing has developed into one of the region’s most successful codes, and many of our athletes compete internationally for South Africa. We are grateful for the funding and equipment.”

Outgoing Chairperson of the West Coast Sport Council Jerome Arendse expressed his appreciation that four more federations received funding this year. “This shows that sport is growing on the West Coast.”
