International Day of Monuments and Sites in Paarl

10 April 2014

The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument and the Hugenote Gedenkskool will host a special programme in celebration of International Day of Monuments and Sites in Paarl on Friday, 11 April 2014.

This day is annually celebrated worldwide on or around 18 April, after being proclaimed by the International Council of Monuments and Sites in 1982 and accepted by UNESCO in 1983. This year’s theme is "Heritage of Commemoration".

Catherine Snel, Manager of Heritage and Education at the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum, says the aim of this day is to raise awareness about our diverse cultural heritage as well as the preservation and protection of it. Guests are expected to visit three heritage sites as part of the programme, namely the Taalmonument, the Anglo Boer War Monument and the Hugenote Gedenkskool.

The programme takes place from 08:30 to 13:30 in the Conference Centre at the Taalmonument. Guest speaker Michael Jonas, Principal Museum Human Scientist at the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, will speak about the theme. Case studies on successful heritage projects will also be shared with guests. Attendance is free of charge.
