Career Boost for Expanded Public Works Programme Beneficiaries

7 April 2014

A total of 94 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) beneficiaries successfully completed the Arts and Culture Management on Community Level training course in Oudtshoorn from 30 March to 4 April 2014. On the last day, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer gave them certificates in recognition of this achievement. He also handed over certificates to 13 EPWP beneficiaries who have been registered as site-specific tour guides at the museums where they work.

The arts management training was part of this year’s Absa Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK). It is accredited by CATHSSETA (the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority) and was facilitated by Artéma, the Institute for Arts Management and Development at North-West University.

Dr Meyer thanked the KKNK for touching lives in a positive way through arts and culture. He said participants should be proud of receiving accredited training from a recognised university. "Your achievement is a process of understanding, releasing and maximising your potential. By providing training opportunities for EPWP beneficiaries, our department has shown its commitment to empowering participants in their careers. We will continue to fund special projects at the KKNK as an investment in arts and culture".

Festival Director Rhodé Snyman said she hoped the beneficiaries would use the skills and knowledge they have acquired to make a difference in their communities. "We also hope that you will contribute to community festivals and major festivals in the future".

Singathwa Ntweka (26), who works at the SA Fisheries Museum in Laaiplek, said the training taught her a lot about community development and the importance of teamwork in the arts. "I found it very interesting and am confident that it will benefit me when I go study tourism management next year. I hope to open my own community centre where people’s lives can be changed through arts and culture".
