Marvel at the Cape Town Carnival

11 March 2014

The streets of the Mother City are set to explode with colour and life when the annual Cape Town Carnival takes to the streets on Saturday, 15 March 2014. The theme for this year’s event is “imagine”.

Designers, artists, inventors, students, entrepreneurs and sponsors have dreamed up a fleet of carnival floats that defy convention and celebrate Mzansi’s creativity. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is contributing to the staging of this year’s event from its cultural tourism budget.

The extravaganza gets off to a jamming start at 15:00 at the Gallows Hill Traffic Department parking lot when performers transform the surrounding pedestrian walkway into party central with live music, dancing and merriment. The procession will begin its magical gallivant down the Fan Walk at 19:30 and end at York Road in Green Point.

The Cape Town Carnival celebrates diversity, creativity and promotes cultural understanding through a vivid procession of magnificent floats, vibrant choreographed dance routines and impressive costumes.

Festivities will culminate in a street party until the early hours featuring house music trio Mi Casa and radio disc jockey DJ Fresh. So bring your camera, your friends and your family. Shake your tail feathers and experience all the colours of the rainbow nation at this free street party and parade.
