Promoting the MOD Programme at Mitchell's Plain Festival

2 December 2013

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) promoted the Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth (MOD) programme at the annual Mitchell’s Plain Festival from 29 November to 1 December 2013.

There are 181 MOD centres at schools across the province providing sport, arts and recreational activities in a safe environment to disadvantaged communities and underprivileged learners after school hours – generally from 14:00 to 18:00.

MOD coaches handed out pamphlets to learners and parents encouraging them to join the programme in the Mitchell’s Plain area and explaining what learners could achieve through joining the programme.

Cohen Fortuin (11) of Eisleben Road Primary School said he would join his nearest MOD centre this holiday after learning what the programme offers and how coaches could develop his dancing skills. “I will also encourage my friends to join me,” said an excited Fortuin.

The MOD programme has showed that, with the opportunities and support of DCAS MOD centres, young people can raise themselves to great heights.
