Celebrating Excellence in South Western District Sport

19 November 2013

Notable sport achievements in the South Western Districts (SWD) region were recognised at the SWD Sport Awards in George on Friday, 15 November 2013.

Athletes, coaches, administrators, technical officials, teams and federations were acknowledged in 23 categories for achievements in the period 1 October 2012 to 31 October 2013.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the SWD Sport Council and George Municipality to honour winners from a wide spectrum of sporting codes and for a variety of notable contributions.

This year was the first time the President’s Award for a person or organisation making an exceptional contribution to SWD sport was handed out.

Chairperson of SWD Sport Council, Goliath Munro honoured Naomi Thiart for longstanding contribution to SWD netball as administrator and coach.

Executive Mayor of George Municipality, Charles Standers thanked the partners and federations that continue to support athletes, and the administrators who put in many hours of voluntary service for the benefit of sport.

Dirk van Der Westhuizen of the DCAS Regional Sport Office in Oudtshoorn said that the event was a success, adding that winners and nominees can be proud of their achievements.

The winners of certain categories are automatic finalists for the Western Cape Sport Awards, which will be handed out in Cape Town next year.
