West Coast Top Sport Achievers Crowned

19 November 2013

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the West Coast Sport Council and Saldanha Bay Municipality to honour sports achievers at the West Coast Sport Awards in Langebaan on Friday, 15 November 2013.

This was the first of four regional award events to be hosted across the Western Cape this month. Twenty proud winners received due recognition for their achievements on the night.

Councillor André Kruger of Saldanha Bay Municipality paid tribute to the nominees and winners for promoting sport in the region. "You’ve shown through your achievements that you can be role models on and off the field. Your hard work, preparation and positive attitudes have made the people of the West Coast proud. This indeed makes us a healthy community."

DCAS Director of Sport Development, Paul Hendricks stressed the importance of investing in youth sport to promote the participation of young people. "It’s good to see young athletes being nominated for their achievements. Their achievements will encourage youth to attend and grow in our Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth (MOD) programme.”

Winners were proud of their achievements and other nominees were motivated to work even harder to achieve their goals. Shore angler and West Coast Sportswoman of the Year, Sunette Steenkamp said, "I didn’t expect to win but my hard work and support from my coach, family and friends paid off. I’m thankful for this accolade."

The West Coast and SWD Sport Award events took place on the same day.

The Boland Sport Awards will be held in Paarl on 21 November and the Metropole Sport Awards will take place in Goodwood on the following day.
