Western Cape Government Gives Recognition to Netball

6 November 2013

The important role that netball is playing in the development of young women in rural areas was recognised by Premier of the Western Cape Ms Helen Zille at a lunch function in Cape Town on Wednesday, 6 November 2013.

The Premier signed and handed over equipment to various netball federations and Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer lauded them for their contributions to the sport.

Representatives from the Western Province, West Coast, Boland, Boland Central and South Western Districts (SWD) regions were in attendance. Earlier this year, Dr Meyer announced a “netball revolution” in the Western Cape to actively promote and develop netball.

“It’s a joy to acknowledge you as presidents, captains and umpires for your contribution and personal sacrifices to the sport. Your leadership and focus on youth development, especially on girls in rural areas, and your hosting of successful events make the Western Cape proud,” said Dr Meyer.

He said effective and efficient administration is a key contributor to the success of netball in the Western Cape. The Minister paid tribute to Western Cape Sport Legend Bennie Saayman, Chairperson of Western Cape Netball.

Saayman thanked the Premier and Dr Meyer for extending cultural warmth to netball. “We’re grateful for the support of the Western Cape Government and its commitment to drive the netball revolution to greater heights in the province.”
