Prince Alfred Hamlet To Have its Own Library Soon

4 October 2013

In 2014, a library will be built in Prince Alfred Hamlet, outside Ceres. On Thursday, 3 October 2013, the Witzenberg Municipality and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Library Services hosted a sod-turning ceremony on the library site.

DCAS made an investment of R5 million towards the library, with construction due to proceed at the beginning of 2014. The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, handed over books, donated by a Worcester couple, Nico and Helena Fourie, to Skurweberg Primary School in the Koue Bokkeveld.

Minister Meyer stressed the importance of reading. He said that the library will create opportunities for the people of Prince Alfred Hamlet, especially the youth, to broaden their knowledge. “Libraries connect people in communities; it promotes social inclusion and intellectual enrichment. I’m confident that this library will foster a culture of reading in the community.”

The Deputy Mayor of Witzenberg Municipality, Mr Kassiem Adams, described the plans to build a new library as a “beacon of hope”. “Members of the community are obliged to travel to Ceres to access library services, so we’re delighted that everyone would soon be able to take pride in Prince Alfred Hamlet’s own library.”

DCAS and its partners are committed to connect people with public spaces such as libraries where they can grow and develop as a community.
