Intellectually Impaired Sports Team Makes Western Cape Proud

3 October 2013

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is proud of the achievements of the Western Cape intellectually impaired team that participated in the South African Sport Association (SASA II) Open Games in Pretoria from 14 to 22 September 2013.

A total of 61 athletes competed in the netball, football, cross country and hokker events. Hokker is a hybrid sport for intellectually impaired participants. The hokker team won gold; the football team was a runner-up, while the netball team finished in sixth place.

The Player of the SASA-II Football Tournament went to Chadley Jacobs. Six provincial players were also selected in the SASA-II football team that will take part in the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (FID-INAS) Football World Tournament in Brazil in August next year.

Ms Agetha Jeftha of DCAS Sport Promotion stressed how important it is to provide all youth with opportunities to participate in sport. “The work of DCAS is assisting participants to make the disability sport slogan ‘nothing about us without us’ a reality.”

According to Jeftha, the talent of athletes has grown over the last few years. Many dedicated coaches and team managers have put in hours of work to enable athletes to perform so well at national level. Achievements in sport for the disabled help to make us proud as a province and as a nation.
