Western Cape Athletes to Compete in National Indigenous Games

17 September 2013

Athletes representing the Western Cape will compete for top honours at the National Indigenous Games Festival in Tshwane from 20 to 24 September 2013. This annual festival is organised by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA).

Provincial teams are expected to compete in nine indigenous games codes: jukskei, morabaraba, diketo, dibeki, drie stokkies, ngati, ncuva, intonga and kho-kho.

In the run-up to the national event, local athletes represented their districts in provincial indigenous games during July. Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer will send off the provincial team on 18 September at a ceremony in Athlone.

Indigenous games form an integral part of Africa’s rich history and heritage. This year’s festival will again focus on promoting and preserving the cultural diversity, national heritage and history of the people of South Africa.

Teams representing their provinces will be hoping that the games strengthen the revival of indigenous games, and further popularise them as part of our African identity.
