Uniting People at the Cape Town Marathon

11 September 2013

Thousands of runners are gearing up to take part in the Cape Town Marathon which starts in Adderley Street outside the central railway station at 06:30 on Sunday, 22 September 2013. There is also a 10 km race which starts at the same time and place.

The event will be hosted by Western Province Athletics, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, with contributions from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and other entities.

The flat, scenic course will provide runners and spectators with opportunities to enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of the city. The 10 km race takes in the city centre, the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point and the Green Point Common before looping back to the city and ending at Green Point Common.

The event offers elite athletes the chance to post a fast marathon time and the eight-hour cut-off will allow first-timers and walkers a fair chance to complete the distance in time. The marathon is a qualifier for the 2014 Comrades Marathon and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon. Entertainment, as well as food and refreshments, will be available for purchase on the Cape Town Stadium forecourt after the race.

The partners are working together to improve the standard of marathon running in the Western Cape, to encourage a culture of healthy living and activity, especially amongst younger Capetonians, and to unite the people of the city. Members of the public are encouraged to line the pavements to support the runners and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
