Western Cape Netball Teams Given Inspirational Send-Off

2 August 2013

“Go to Rustenburg and make our province proud”. This was the message by the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer to provincial netball teams that will represent their regions in the upcoming Spar National Championships from 5 to 10 August. The teams from Western Province, Boland, Boland Central and South Western Districts (SWD) were given a send-off by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in Cape Town on Friday, 2 August 2013.

With the focus on women during the month of August, Dr Meyer said it was an honour and joy for him to acknowledge women’s sport in this manner. “We are all here today to honour the success of women’s sport in the province. Your contribution to netball changes lives, in particular young girls in rural and disadvantaged areas,” he said.

Earlier this year, Minister Meyer announced a “netball revolution” in the Western Cape. The aim was to actively promote and develop netball. Dr Meyer said he is happy with the impact of this revolution as it has already seen the development of improved facilities, structures and an increase in male participation.

According to the Minister, netball is making a difference in communities. “Through your involvement, you are leading this revolution to change lives. The Western Cape Government is confident in the direction netball is heading in the province,” he told the representatives of the teams.

Dr Meyer singled out effective and efficient administration in netball as a key contributor to its success in the Western Cape and also paid tribute to Western Cape Sport Legends such as netball legend and Chairperson of Western Cape Netball, Bennie Saayman. “We wish you well. Come back with medals,” he told the representatives.

Saayman thanked DCAS for supporting netball. “We are going to make the people in the Western Cape proud and we hope that this support will take the netball revolution to even greater heights.”
