Bookbinding and Paste Paper-Making Workshop a Big Success

9 May 2013

A successful two-day workshop on bookbinding and making paste paper took place at the Western Cape Provincial Archives in Cape Town on 2 and 3 May 2013. It was attended by participants from the University of Cape Town Library, Iziko Museums and interested members of the public. The event formed part of the public activities for National Archives Week, which runs from 6–10 May.

Ms Mary Minicka, Head of Preservation at the Western Cape Archives and Records Service said the workshop gave participants valuable skills. “The sessions were suitable for people with little or no exposure to making paste paper and bookbinding. Through the use of small groups, we were able to give participants a high level of personal attention. They learned skills that have a long tradition and history.”

Participants used no adhesive methods as they repaired items, and they learned about the importance of preserving valuable archival items. While this kind of work takes concentration and patience, participants enjoyed the experience.

Mr Santino Campbell of Iziko Museums said he learned valuable skills such as problem-solving as well as using appropriate methods to repair valuable old materials. “I work with old books every day, and I now know how to repair books myself”, he said. Supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and its partners, the workshop formed an important link with the Cape’s cultural heritage.
