Dramatic Admission by Count Augusta

15 October 2003
Comment by Riaan Aucamp, Spokesperson for Western Cape Premier, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, on 16 October 2003

The dramatic admission of guilt on charges of corruption by Count Augusta today confirms that Premier Van Schalkwyk acted correctly by referring the entire affair, and the alleged involvement in corruption of Mr Peter Marais and Mr David Malatsi, for investigation and possible prosecution. It is also confirmation that the Premier's actions were neither over-hasty nor overly harsh as some critics have claimed.

In the light of the fact that other aspects of the case remain sub judice, the Premier will refrain from making any further comments about the charges against Mr Marais and Mr Malatsi - namely that they were involved in corruption either in the name of the Western Cape NNP or for personal enrichment.
