Minister Winde and Provincial Police Commissioner to host press conference

7 November 2018

Tomorrow, Thursday, 8 November, following a meeting with the Western Cape SAPS management, Minister of Community Safety, Alan Winde, will host a press conference. He will be joined by the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Jula.

The media will be briefed on the outcomes of the meeting, which will among others include what SAPS’s plans are to address crime in the province and how the working relationship between the police and the department will be strengthened.

A core function of the department is to promote professional policing through effective oversight.

The province has a dire gang problem, with the 2018 crime statistics revealing that 83% of all gang-related murders in South Africa occurred in the Western Cape. Crime is exacerbated by under-resourcing, as 85% of the province’s police stations are understaffed.

Minister Winde will also speak on his approach to his new portfolio in addressing crime.

There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

ALL MEDIA ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.
