Today, 17 February, 2015, Premier Helen Zille will meet and greet the 2015 Year Beyond volunteers.
Year Beyond is a Western Cape Government initiative run in partnership with a number of NGOs to implement an after school academic enrichment programme in schools with Mass Opportunity and Development (MOD) centres. The programme, which was successfully launched and piloted last year, involves top matric and university graduates volunteering to tutor primary and high school learners in MOD centres in order to improve education outcomes in the province.
This year, the programme will be expanded to 16 schools in the province in addition to the four MOD centres where the programme was piloted last year. 70 volunteers will be taking part in the 2015 Year Beyond programme.
As part of the programme, volunteers will also take part in a leadership course that is run by Stellenbosch University's Frederik van Zyl Slabbert Institute of Leadership, free of charge.
Each year volunteers will also take part in a Leadership Challenge. The theme of the challenge will change each year. The purpose of the challenge will be to provide a structured opportunity for the volunteers to reflect on their experiences in the schools, in order to improve on education outcomes.
The 2015 challenge will be revealed to the volunteers at the briefing tomorrow.
