City Outlines Programme for Khayelitsha Remembrance Evening and Screening of Parliamentary Sitting

9 December 2013

The City of Cape Town is hosting two events to commemorate the late Nelson Mandela today, 9 December 2013.

Screening of Joint Sitting of Parliament

The City of Cape Town will give residents the opportunity to gather together to watch the Joint Sitting of Parliament that is being held to commemorate the late Nelson Mandela’s life on Monday 9 December 2013.

The parliamentary sitting will be shown live on big screens at the Grand Parade in Darling Street from 14:00 when it starts.

The National Government has explained that the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament – the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces – will honour and commemorate the former president, Nelson Mandela.

Residents in Cape Town will be given a chance to come together and witness this momentous occasion as it is broadcast, fittingly, in a space that holds a special place in Mandela’s history. He delivered his freedom speech from the balcony of the City Hall overlooking the Grand Parade, just hours after his release from prison on 11 February 1990.

Evening of Remembrance in Khayelitsha

Members of the public have been invited to join City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, for an evening of remembrance in Khayelitsha to honour the late Nelson Mandela.

The following groups will perform: Masi Choir (Masiphumelele), Carmel Fellowship (Mitchells Plain), St Michaels and All Angels group (Khayelitsha), and the Bongani Methodist Church

There will be inter-faith prayers and expressive poetry performances by DeJa Vue and Mfundo as well as prayers and reflections of Madiba by traditional leaders.

The event starts at 19:00 at the OR Tambo Hall in Mew Way, Khayelitsha.
