Colin Eglin to Receive Provincial Official Funeral

9 December 2013

Statement by Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape

I am very pleased that the funeral of the late Colin Eglin, to take place on Monday, 9 December at Christ Church, Constantia at 11:00 has been declared a Provincial Official Funeral by President Jacob Zuma, as per the provisions of the Ministerial Handbook.

Colin Eglin was one of our South African greats whose contribution to the defeat of apartheid and a peaceful transition to democracy have guaranteed him a position of stature in the annals of history. His memory will live on as a monument to his profound record of service – opposing apartheid for over four decades, serving as leader of the opposition twice, and being instrumental in negotiating and drafting the Constitution.

He deserves nothing less than to be laid in his resting place in this dignified and befitting manner to honour him.
