20 March 2013

The Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will hand over houses for two beneficiaries with special needs in Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha, on 21 March 2013 at 11:45. The event will also be attended by the National Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Zoe Kota-Fredericks. Both Provincial Minister Madikizela and National Deputy Minister Fredericks will deliver addresses.

The Department during the 16 Days of Activism in 2012 committed itself to build homes in Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha, for two families headed by a disabled parent. The first of the families is headed by Mr Dingiswayo, who was living with his wife and matric son in a shack erected on the pavement in Khayelitsha. Mr Dingiswayo, who is taken care of by his wife, is wheel chair bound after having lost a leg and having a stroke, and found it very difficult to access shared sanitation services.

The second family is headed Mr Miggels was involved in a motor vehicle accident in 1997. He sustained a spinal cord injury and is now a C5 tetraplegic which means he is paralysed in the arms and legs. As a disabled person he encounters extreme difficulties to get to the ground floor and back of his 3rd floor council apartment. Mr Miggels wife is his caretaker and they both survive on a government Disability grant.

The Department provided land, and through partnership with Corobrik, who have donated the building materials, were able to build houses enhanced for special needs for the two beneficiaries.
