Celebrating 20 years – The Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal

20 October 2020

Today, the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements kicks-off celebrations marking the 20th year of the Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal (RHT) in Cape Town.

Established in 2000, the RHT is proud to celebrate another year of growth, creativity and success in 2020, in addition to marking the significant milestone of serving Western Cape residents for the past 20 years.

Minister Simmers says: “The RHT is a critical instrument in resolving matters between landlords and tenants. They continue to play a significant role in finding the middle ground where there might be conflict. The ability do this for 20 years and still continuing must be celebrated.”

The evolution of the RHT over the past 20 years saw members and support staff of the Department assisting many landlords, tenants and agents to settle disputes at no cost to the parties concerned. At inception, the RHT received just over 100 cases for the year, compared to an average of over 3000 cases per annum in 2020.

For any organisation to endure this time period and be as relevant today as it was at its founding is quite a feat. With various activities planned as part of the 20-year celebration, this kick-off event comes with an important announcement and a peak into the future of continuing to provide this free service to landlords and tenants of the Western Cape.
