Yesterday, Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Tertuis Simmers engaged the relevant Ward Councillors, sub-council and Super Project Steering Committee (PSC) of the Greater Retreat Housing Project.
Accompanied by the Department’s senior executive officials, a status report and update of the planned development, which will deliver approximately 5 000 housing opportunities, was provided.
Minister Simmers said: “I thank the relevant structures for a fruitful engagement and allowing us to present the progress that is being made with this project. It was particularly pleasing to reaffirm our continued commitment to this project and our intention to remain within the timelines.
I also thank them for once again allowing us to clearly state what our housing allocation criteria is, and how we need to ensure that the elderly, people living with a certified medical disability, those, 15 years and longer on the housing demand database and backyard dwellers, are our priority, as we seek to ensure that their lives are drastically improved.”
The Greater Retreat project, which includes Wards 62, Ward 63, Ward 65, Ward 66, Ward 67, Ward 68, Ward 72 and Ward 110, is a mixed-use development and will consist of Breaking New Ground (BNG) units, Community Residential Units (CRU), Rental - and Social Housing, Open Market and Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP). The project is currently in its planning phase, which includes various investigations and statutory processes. Various amenities such as schools and recreational facilities will also form part of this development.
“I further thank those who followed proceedings live on Facebook, as this is another tool, we’re using to ensure full transparency and that no one is excluded from the process. I therefore call on residents to not allow themselves to be duped by unscrupulous characters spreading false information about this project. Instead, potential beneficiaries should engage their PSC’s and Ward Councillors to acquire the correct information.
As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to accelerating human settlement delivery, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, resilient and sustainable human settlements in an open opportunity society, added Simmers.”
